Niger Prime Minister Reaffirms Strong Partnership with UNFPA

Niamey, December 12, 2025 - His Excellency Mr. Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance of Niger, received Dr. Sennen Hounton, Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in a high-level meeting held on Friday. The discussion took place in the presence of Mr. Bakary Yaou Sangaré, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, and Nigeriens Abroad.

During the audience, the Nigerien government reaffirmed the strategic importance of its partnership with UNFPA, highlighting its role in promoting the well-being of the population, particularly in maternal health, family planning, and human rights protection. The collaboration was described as exemplary and essential for sustainable national development.

Dr. Hounton, who was in Niger to attend the General Assembly of the Association of Traditional Chiefs in Maradi, was commended for his dedication and for UNFPA’s continued support in working with local authorities and communities. Nigerien officials emphasized the crucial role of traditional chiefs in preventing maternal mortality, promoting birth spacing, and combating gender-based violence, highlighting the intersection of cultural leadership and public health initiatives.

The government also welcomed the appointment of the new UNFPA Representative in Niger, ensuring continuity and strengthening institutional coordination. Looking ahead, authorities expressed confidence in the 2026-2029 UNFPA strategic plan, which is expected to enhance support for national priorities and reinforce Niger’s efforts in development, peace, and security.
