Niger Launches National Drug Testing Campaign for Truck Drivers
Niamey, December 12, 2025 - The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, with support from the Central Office for the Repression of Illicit Drug Trafficking (OCRTIS), officially launched the national drug testing campaign for truck drivers, known locally as “Sabka Lahiya” in Hausa and “Zoumbou Bani” in Zarma. The ceremony took place on December 8, 2025, at the Filingué road checkpoint, attended by Colonel-Major Abdourahamane Amadou, the Governor of Niamey, the Director of OCRTIS, the Attorney General, and other dignitaries.
The campaign aims to strengthen road safety through systematic checks on roads and at checkpoints, preventing accidents related to drug use among drivers. The Governor of Niamey, Major General Assoumane Abdou Harouna, praised the initiative, promising regular and rigorous inspections to protect road users.
Following the launch, the Minister and delegation observed a demonstration of screening and sampling operations, highlighting the professionalism of the testing team.
The campaign will extend to all regional capitals under the slogan: “Drugs and Driving: A Deadly Danger”, making the prevention of drug use among drivers a priority in Niger’s security governance reform.
