Niamey Hosts 1st ESA Trade Fair and 3rd Ministerial Meeting: Boosting Regional Economic Sovereignty

Niamey, December 10, 2025 - From December 15 to 20, Niamey is set to host a historic series of events for the Confederation of Sahel States (ESA), combining the 3rd Ministerial Meeting on Trade and Industry with the first-ever ESA Trade Fair at the Palais du 29 juillet. These initiatives aim to strengthen economic exchange and integration among Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

Established as a confederation in 2024, the ESA is pursuing shared economic sovereignty, creating a platform for over 80 million consumers in the integrated market. The trade fair, rotating annually among member states, will feature over 500 booths representing businesses, institutions, universities, and civil society. Five partner countries are also participating to enhance cross-regional economic ties.

Under the theme “Produce, Process, and Consume Locally for the Economic Sovereignty of the ESA Region,” the fair focuses on stimulating local production, promoting regional industrialization, and strengthening economic resilience. Key objectives include boosting local consumption, combating fraud, ensuring quality compliance, and developing exports, in alignment with ESA’s vision of an integrated and self-reliant economy.

Preparatory sessions on December 13 and 14 will allow technical experts to review progress since the last meeting in Ouagadougou, paving the way for ministerial decisions on reforms for a private sector aligned with ESA priorities. Panels and workshops during the trade fair will address value chain development, SME financing, and promotion of local products, creating opportunities for entrepreneurship and regional collaboration.

The ministers of trade and industry emphasized that these events are central to translating high-level commitments into tangible benefits for populations, while showcasing Niamey as a symbol of a new confederal economic dynamic driven by local resources, innovation, and solidarity among member states.
