Ngororero Targets Clean Water Access Gap After Major Pipeline Works

Ngororero, August 23, 2026 - Ngororero District said 66,232 residents still lack access to clean water, making water supply expansion a continuing public infrastructure priority in western Rwanda.

District figures show 301,723 people, or 82.8 percent of households, are connected to clean water, while about 18 percent remain without access. Local authorities said work will continue on building and repairing water pipelines to reach full coverage.

Recent projects completed in the 2024/25 period included the Muhembe, Nyamyotsi and Nyirarongero pipelines serving Muhanda, Kabaya, Hindiro, Kavumu, Sovu, Kageyo and Ngororero sectors. The works cost Rwf9.31 billion and helped extend clean water access to more than 130,200 people.

The pipelines have combined capacity of 3,084 cubic meters per day, supported by 117 pumps, indicating continued investment needs in rural water distribution and maintenance.
