Nduhungirehe: “There Can Be No Umuganura Without Unity”

Kigali, 7 August 2026 - Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olivier Nduhungirehe, has described Umuganura as a symbol of national unity, saying the traditional harvest celebration can only achieve its purpose when Rwandans are united.

Speaking during the Kigali City Umuganura celebrations in Nyarugenge District, Nduhungirehe said the tradition dates back to ancient Rwanda and is built around values including unity, hard work, patriotism, integrity and self-reliance. He said unity remains central to the country’s reconstruction and development.

The minister said Umuganura provides an opportunity for Rwandans to celebrate achievements, express gratitude for what has been accomplished and assess shortcomings that need to be addressed before the next year’s harvest.

He also stressed that the traditional sharing of locally produced beverages during Umuganura is intended to promote fellowship and community, rather than excessive drinking. His remarks came as Rwanda continues efforts to address the production and consumption of substandard alcoholic beverages.

Kigali Mayor Samuel Dusengiyumva used the celebration to highlight social challenges affecting young people, particularly alcohol abuse and drug use. He said stronger parental responsibility is essential to preventing young people from becoming vulnerable to such problems.

Dusengiyumva urged parents to take responsibility for their children’s upbringing, safety and development, stressing that families have a key role in raising a generation capable of contributing to the development of their communities and Rwanda as a whole.
