Museveni Presses NRM Lawmakers On Corruption And Health Staffing

Kampala, August 7, 2026 - President Yoweri Museveni has tasked National Resistance Movement lawmakers to confront corruption while also signaling a possible overhaul of staffing arrangements in Uganda's public health sector.

Museveni said he would soon present a policy proposal to Cabinet aimed at addressing gaps in the public health workforce. He indicated that absentee medical officers could be replaced by unemployed health professionals willing to serve in public facilities.

The remarks put service delivery and public-sector accountability back at the centre of the ruling party's domestic agenda. For investors and development partners, the emphasis is relevant because corruption control and health-system capacity remain core indicators of state effectiveness and public spending discipline.

The proposed health staffing changes would also interact with broader tensions in the medical workforce, including disputes over deployment, allowances and working conditions. Any Cabinet decision could affect payroll management, hiring practices and labour relations across public hospitals.
