Museveni Blasts Andrew Mwenda in Heated Defense of Uganda’s Industrialisation Agenda

Kampala, May 23, 2026 - President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has launched a sharp rebuke against veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda, accusing him of undermining Uganda’s industrialisation strategy, leaking confidential government discussions, and advancing what he described as neo-colonial interests.

In a detailed statement released on social media, the President responded to recent remarks attributed to Mwenda questioning his leadership and judgment, dismissing claims that he is “senile” while defending his continued capacity to lead the country.

“Mr. Mwenda, thank you for declaring me senile and incapable of judging right,” Museveni wrote. “You will, however, discover that at 82, I am still able to defend Uganda and myself with the Bible, the AK-47 and the pen.”

The President’s response expanded into a broader defense of government economic policy, particularly its industrialisation drive and efforts to promote value addition in agriculture and mineral resources.

Museveni accused Mwenda of consistently criticizing local entrepreneurs and innovators while ignoring what he described as successful domestic industrial projects across the country.

He cited several examples of local initiatives, including manufacturing and agricultural ventures, arguing that they demonstrate Uganda’s growing capacity for self-reliant development.

The President also defended state-supported projects such as Kiira Motors Corporation, rejecting criticism over delays and government investment in the automotive initiative.

He further argued that opposition to such projects reflects resistance to Africa’s industrial transformation and a preference for continued dependence on raw material exports.
