Musanze Mine Collapse Kills Four During Informal Soil Extraction

By Jean-Marc Okito3 min read

Musanze, August 25, 2026 - Four people died and two others were seriously injured when a mine collapsed in Musanze District as residents dug for soil, underscoring safety risks in informal mining and construction-related excavation.

Six residents were working at the site when the structure gave way. Local authorities and emergency responders moved to recover victims and support the injured.

The incident highlights ongoing challenges in rural districts where informal extraction activity can expose communities to workplace hazards. For investors, it reinforces the importance of regulated mining operations and local enforcement capacity in northern Rwanda.
