MSF Says Ebola Recoveries Rise In Ituri As Deaths Remain High

By Sarah Ndaya2 min read

Bunia, August 21, 2026 - MSF said more than 1,100 people had recovered from Ebola in Ituri, but warned that high mortality and delayed treatment continued to threaten outbreak control.

The medical organization cited more than 5,200 confirmed cases and a fatality rate of about 47 percent to 50 percent. It said 62 percent of deaths occurred outside treatment centers and that one person died every 30 minutes during the previous week.

The update came 100 days after the epidemic was declared on May 15, with responders emphasizing early care and community engagement as critical to reducing deaths.

The figures underline the strain on health systems in eastern DRC and the importance of local trust for any sustained containment effort.
