Mother and Son Arrested on Suspicion of Killing Family Patriarch
Ruhango, Rwanda - January 19, 2026 - The Rwanda National Police (RNP) have arrested a 60-year-old woman and her 26-year-old son on suspicion of killing her husband and the young man’s father, Birasamasha Donath, aged 70. The incident occurred on January 19, 2026, in Kivomo Village, Murama Cell, Bweramana Sector, Ruhango District. According to preliminary information, the woman allegedly asked her son to help her kill the victim following a family dispute, reportedly over property. Responders found Birasamasha’s body covered in blood at the scene. The RNP Southern Province spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Kamanzi Hassan, said that local authorities confirmed the family had an ongoing property conflict. “It is true, it is suspected that this 70-year-old man was killed by his wife and child. The two were immediately arrested and detained at the Kabagari Police Station while investigations continue,” he said. CIP Kamanzi urged residents to avoid domestic conflicts, promote a culture of dialogue, and seek support from family members, mediators, and local authorities when disputes arise. The victim’s body was taken to Gitwe Hospital for an autopsy. Under Rwandan law, intentional homicide is a criminal offense punishable by life imprisonment if convicted.
