Minister Orders Fresh Probe Into Mpondwe Border Market Dispute

By Amina Kabasele2 min read

Mpondwe, August 23, 2026 - A minister ordered a fresh investigation into a dispute at the Mpondwe border cattle market, escalating a local commercial conflict with implications for property rights and district-level governance.

Nicholas Mwebaze, a member of the affected cooperative, said the group had secured court rulings and ministerial directives in its favor but had still been blocked by local district officials.

The case centers on allegations that local officials colluded to frustrate implementation of decisions already made by the courts and central government authorities.

The dispute is significant for Uganda's border commerce because enforcement of rulings and ministerial directives affects investor confidence in local administration and market access.
