Measles and Mpox Cases Threaten Isangi Health Zone

Isangi, Tshopo, March 2, 2026 - The Isangi health zone is facing a dual health threat as measles and Mpox cases are confirmed in the district, according to Dr. Charles Koy, chief medical officer. In the Yalosase health area, of 18 samples tested, five were positive for measles and one for rubella. Mpox cases were also reported. In the Weko health area, all seven samples tested positive for Mpox. As of February 28, at least 23 Mpox cases have been recorded, including two deaths. A small-scale local response has been organized, but resources remain severely limited, Dr. Koy noted. “We have forwarded the report to our superiors, and today a partner came to investigate and confirm whether there is an outbreak of cases,” he said. Health facilities in Isangi are inadequate, with some treatment centers destroyed by Congo River flooding. The health zone also lacks essential medications for providing free medical care. “For now, our SOS is for partners to assist with the medical treatment of Mpox and measles cases,” Dr. Koy pleaded, urging urgent support from government and humanitarian partners.
