Mbuji-Mayi: Normal Air Traffic Resumes After Runway Upgrade

By Amina Kabasele2 min readFrançais

The runway upgrade at Bipemba Airport in Mbuji-Mayi was completed on November 9, 2025, allowing air traffic to resume on November 10.

Launched in August, the project involved widening and extending the runway, laying a second layer of asphalt, and adapting the infrastructure to accommodate Airbus A320 aircraft, increasing the runway length to 2,320 meters.

The previous closure, which lasted approximately two weeks, stranded many travelers and missionaries, who were able to reach their destinations as soon as the runway reopened.

This upgrade is part of the national airport infrastructure modernization program, which aims to improve safety, streamline traffic flow, and strengthen regional connectivity. Construction of complementary infrastructure will continue until next year.
