Mass grave containing 32 bodies, mostly children, discovered in Kericho

Kigali, April 4, 2026 - Authorities in Kenya have launched an investigation after 32 bodies, mostly children, were discovered in a mass grave in the Kericho area.

Police said the exhumation began following a court order directing them to recover 14 bodies suspected to have been buried in the area. The operation later uncovered additional remains, bringing the total to 32 bodies.

According to officials, the victims include seven adults and 25 children. A Kenyan medical officer said post-mortem examinations are underway to establish the identities of the deceased and determine the exact causes of death.

Preliminary findings suggest that some of the bodies were transferred from a hospital in Nyamira to Kericho for burial without proper authorization, raising questions over procedural and legal compliance.

Authorities stated that some remains appeared to have been removed from a hospital before burial, but emphasized that forensic analysis is ongoing to clarify circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The discovery has prompted widespread concern, with investigators continuing efforts to determine whether the burials were conducted in violation of legal procedures or involve additional criminal elements.
