Martin Fayulu Calls Washington Agreement a “Trap” Set by Kagame

Kinshasa - Congolese opposition leader Martin Fayulu described the peace agreement signed on December 4, 2025, in Washington between the DRC and Rwanda as a “trap” orchestrated by Rwandan President Paul Kagame, during an interview on France 24 on December 11.

Fayulu argued that the agreement, concluded following European and American sanctions as well as UN Resolution 2773, was designed to circumvent international pressure and prepare for war in eastern Congo, driven by economic and territorial interests.

He claimed that while US President Donald Trump was facilitating a strategic partnership agreement between the DRC and the United States, Kagame pursued his own objectives, disregarding the spirit of peace intended by the deal.

Fayulu also denounced the sub-regional nature of the ongoing crisis, involving the DRC, Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, and Tanzania, noting that the resumption of fighting in South Kivu-particularly the capture of Uvira by AFC/M23 rebels supported by Kigali-demonstrates the persistent tensions despite the agreement.
