Malian Prime Minister Calls Fuel Shortage an ‘Attempt to Destabilize’ the Country

Bamako -, October 22, 2025 - As Mali continues to grapple with a crippling fuel crisis, Prime Minister Major General Abdoulaye Maïga has described the situation as a deliberate “attempt to destabilize” the country.

Speaking on Tuesday, October 21, during a meeting with members of the Malian Group of Oil Professionals (GMPP), Maïga expressed deep concern over the persistent shortage that has paralyzed transportation and disrupted economic activity across the country.

“What is happening to us is a change in modus operandi and an attempt at destabilization,” the Prime Minister said, referring to the recent blockade of hydrocarbon supplies by terrorist groups. The attacks have resulted in the deaths of several tanker drivers and the destruction of hundreds of fuel trucks along key supply routes.

Discussions with oil operators centered on finding concrete solutions, including enhancing the security of fuel convoys, compensating damages, and ensuring business continuity. The president of the GMPP, Ibrahim Touré, urged companies to remain resilient and to stand in solidarity with national authorities.

Maïga reassured operators of the government’s commitment to resolving the crisis. “Let us share our grief. Our thoughts go out to the civilians and soldiers who have paid the price in blood in this crisis,” he said. “Rest assured that there is no point of divergence - your problems are our problems.”

The fuel blockade has worsened the humanitarian and economic situation across Mali, driving up the prices of rice, cooking oil, and other essentials. Farmers, too, have been hit hard - many unable to harvest their rice fields due to the lack of fuel for agricultural machinery.

Authorities say they are intensifying efforts to secure transport corridors and restore fuel supplies, but for now, the crisis continues to test the resilience of both citizens and the government.
