Mali Suspends Entry of U.S. Nationals, Announces Limited Exemptions

Koulouba, January 2, 2026 The Government of Mali has clarified the implementation of its recent decision concerning the entry of United States nationals into Malian territory, following its press release issued on December 30, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation announced. In a new statement released from Koulouba, the Malian authorities confirmed that, in line with the principle of reciprocity, the entry of U.S. nationals into the Republic of Mali has been fully suspended, subject to a limited number of exceptions. According to the Ministry, the suspension does not apply to the following categories: U.S. citizens who are permanent residents of Mali; U.S. nationals holding a valid Malian visa; Specific categories of U.S. citizens, including diplomats, athletes, and any individual whose presence in Mali serves duly established national interests. The government emphasized that this decision is part of a broader diplomatic response to recent restrictions imposed by the United States on Malian nationals, which Bamako considers unilateral and unjustified. The Ministry further stated that the measure will be regularly and appropriately reviewed, depending on developments in bilateral relations and the broader diplomatic context. Any changes to the policy will be officially communicated through established government channels. This clarification comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions between Mali and the United States, as Bamako increasingly asserts its sovereignty and demands equal treatment for its citizens in international relations.
