Mali Secures Geographic Indication for Bogolan
Bamako, April 16, 2026 - Mali has taken a major step in safeguarding its cultural heritage with the official presentation of the registration certificate recognizing Bogolan as a Protected Geographical Indication. The ceremony, held on Thursday at the Radisson Collection Hotel in Bamako, formally marked the international recognition of Malian Bogolan as a protected textile heritage product. The event was presided over by the Minister of Industry and Trade, Moussa Alassane Diallo, in the presence of several government officials, including the Minister of Crafts, Culture, Hospitality and Tourism, Mamou Daffé, and the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Professor Bouréma Kansaye. Also in attendance was the Director General of the African Intellectual Property Organization (OAPI), Denis Loukou Bohoussou, alongside local authorities from Bamako’s 4th district and other institutional and cultural stakeholders. The recognition of Bogolan as a Protected Geographical Indication is expected to enhance its legal protection, preserve traditional know-how, and strengthen its value on international markets. It also aims to support local artisans and promote the textile as a symbol of Mali’s cultural identity and creative industry potential. Officials emphasized that this certification represents not only a cultural achievement but also an economic opportunity, positioning Malian craftsmanship more firmly within global value chains while protecting it from imitation and misuse. The initiative reflects broader national efforts to promote cultural industries as drivers of sustainable development and economic diversification.
