Mali’s Transition President Meets Legal Team After Court Victory Over Regional Sanctions

Bamako, March 2, 2026 - Mali’s transitional president Assimi Goïta received the legal team that represented the country before regional courts following a ruling that declared sanctions imposed on Mali in 2022 illegal.

The meeting took place on Monday in Bamako and followed the January 28 decision by the Court of Justice of the West African Economic and Monetary Union, which ruled in favor of Mali in its dispute with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU).

The sanctions had been imposed during a tense political period in early 2022 after Mali’s military authorities delayed a transition to civilian rule.

During the audience, Goïta praised the legal team for their work defending the country’s interests in the case.

The delegation included Justice and Human Rights Minister Mahamadou Kassogué, along with lawyers Ousmane Mama Traoré, Fatoumata Sidibé Diarra, and Amadou Tiéoulé Diarra, who took part in the legal proceedings.

Human Rights Concerns Raised in Azawad

Separately, the association Kal Akal released a report on March 1 documenting alleged human rights violations in Azawad and central Mali.

According to the report, the group recorded 11 cases of executions and massacres, 13 cases of arrests and disappearances, and six incidents involving destruction and looting.

The organization said civilians were killed and that many communities had their livelihoods severely affected.

The report attributes most of the alleged violations to the Malian armed forces and allied Russian fighters linked to the Afrika Korps group.
