Mali | Over Accusations of Subversion and Glorifying Terrorism

Bamako, January 16, 2026 - Mali has taken a radical decision. On January 16, 2026, the Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization, Major General Abdoulaye Maïga, signed a decree banning the dissemination, distribution, and sale of the Jeune Afrique newspaper throughout the country.

The drastic measure, effective immediately, cites serious grounds, including accusations of subversion and the glorification of terrorism following articles concerning hydrocarbon supplies. Malian authorities also allege the outlet made “unfounded” accusations, displayed a blatant lack of journalistic objectivity, deliberate bias, and incitement to hatred in its coverage of sensitive topics.

The decision specifically mentions allegations of abuses committed against the authorities and armed forces of member countries of the Confederation of Sahel States. Anyone violating the provisions of the decree is subject to the penalties stipulated by Malian law.
