Mali | Kal Akal 2025 Annual Report Highlights Worsening Human Rights Situation in Azawad

Kidal, January 13, 2026 - The Kal Akal Association’s 2025 annual report paints an extremely worrying picture of the human rights situation in the Azawad region. Based on corroborated and verified information, the report highlights widespread and systematic violence perpetrated against civilian populations. A total of 573 cases of summary executions and airstrikes were recorded, indiscriminately targeting women, children, and the elderly, particularly in markets and during community gatherings. Additionally, there were 276 cases of abduction, enforced disappearance, and torture, particularly affecting community leaders, which has severely undermined social cohesion and local governance. The humanitarian consequences are considerable: more than 210 mass displacements, destruction of livelihoods and vital infrastructure, as well as 117 cases of looting and destruction of civilian property. Environmental degradation and restricted access to essential resources further exacerbate the population’s vulnerability. Despite their limited number, the documented cases of sexual violence have lasting consequences for victims and their communities. Kal Akal concludes that 2025 will be among the darkest years in Azawad’s recent history, marked by the collapse of the social fabric, chronic insecurity, and profound collective trauma. In response, the organization reaffirms its commitment to documenting violations, strengthening the protection of vulnerable populations, and intensifying its actions in 2026 to promote resilience and provide support for victims.
