Mali Aligns with Morocco on Western Sahara, Withdraws Recognition of Sahrawi Republic
Bamako, April 10, 2026 - The Government of Mali has announced a significant shift in its diplomatic position on the Western Sahara issue, withdrawing its recognition of the self-proclaimed “Sahrawi Republic” and expressing support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative.
In an official statement, Bamako described the Moroccan proposal as a “serious and realistic” framework for resolving the long-standing dispute, emphasizing the importance of solutions that respect Moroccan sovereignty. The announcement also highlighted the historical ties between Mali and Morocco, as well as Morocco’s role in supporting regional stability and development.
Following the decision, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita announced a series of reciprocal measures, including an increase in scholarships for Malian students to 300 and the removal of electronic visa requirements for Malian nationals. A joint cooperation commission is expected to meet in Bamako in July to further strengthen bilateral relations.
The announcement has drawn criticism from Algerian sources, which described the move as provocative and questioned the legitimacy of Mali’s transitional authorities to take such a position on the matter.
The development marks a notable recalibration of Mali’s foreign policy orientation within the broader regional diplomatic landscape.
