Mahama Prepares For AU Chairmanship As West Africa Backs Candidacy

Accra, August 24, 2026 - Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama began preparations to succeed Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye as African Union chair, with inauguration expected in January 2027.

Ghana's foreign minister said Mahama's tenure is expected to be transformative, citing a high-level expert committee that has submitted five reports including a roadmap and work plan for his term.

ECOWAS heads of state and government officially endorsed Mahama's candidacy at the 68th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers in Abuja. The bloc said supporting Mahama would strengthen West Africa's voice on peace, security and economic development at continental level.

Mahama is also the AU special envoy on justice for Africans and people of African descent, gender equality and African financial institutions. His candidacy unfolded as he participated in high-level gatherings in Kigali, including the Africa Mindset Reset Forum.

The AU chairmanship rotation will shape continental diplomacy on conflict prevention, integration and development financing across Africa.
