Goma, North Kivu - Magloire Paluku Kavunga, a former journalist, writer, poet, and founder of Radio Kivu 1, was shot dead on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, in the streets of Goma while returning to his home in the Himbi neighborhood.

Aged 58 and originally from Butembo, Paluku had served at the Ministry of Culture before joining the AFC/M23 rebellion from Bunagana, in Rutshuru territory. In July 2024, he was sentenced to death in absentia during the trial of Corneille Nangaa and 24 others, accused of war crimes, treason, and participating in an insurrection.

The exact circumstances of his death remain unclear, prompting his family to demand a thorough investigation to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. His assassination has sparked strong emotions in eastern DRC, where he was widely recognized as a cultural and media figure.
