Macron Urges Commitment to DRC-Rwanda Peace Agreement

French President Emmanuel Macron has welcomed the peace agreement signed by Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), emphasizing that both sides must honor their commitments to achieve lasting peace in the Great Lakes Region.

The agreement, signed by President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and President Félix Tshisekedi of the DRC, includes provisions for preserving national sovereignty, dismantling armed groups, establishing joint security structures, repatriating refugees, and promoting regional economic cooperation. It also outlines the roles of MONUSCO and other institutions in supporting humanitarian operations.

The signing ceremony was attended by several heads of state and dignitaries, including Angola’s João Lourenço, Kenya’s William Ruto, Burundi’s Evariste Ndayishimiye, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, and Ugandan Vice President Jessica Alupo.

President Macron praised the diplomatic efforts of the United States, Qatar, Togo, and the African Union in facilitating the agreement. He called on all parties to respect their obligations so that the people of the DRC and the region can enjoy peace and stability.

During the ceremony, President Kagame expressed gratitude to the attending leaders, highlighting the support of President Donald Trump in advancing peace, and reaffirmed Rwanda’s commitment to stability and compliance with the agreement.

President Tshisekedi assured that the DRC is prepared to implement all provisions, including the dismantling of armed groups, and emphasized a partnership based on mutual respect, non-interference, and cooperation to fight armed groups.

Both countries agreed to resolve disagreements peacefully, avoid provocative actions, and refrain from supporting or engaging in military aggression, either directly or indirectly.
