Lutale Turns To Daughter After Defense Team Exits Treason Trial
Kampala, August 25, 2026 - Treason suspect Obeid Lutale turned to his daughter Mariam Lutale for legal representation after the collapse of his defense team, deepening scrutiny of a politically sensitive trial.
The shift followed the arrest of Erias Lukwago, the deportation of Martha Karua and the mass withdrawal of other defense lawyers from proceedings before trial judge Emmanuel Baguma.
Mariam Lutale joined the case to represent her father after the defense shake-up left him without his previous legal team.
The episode adds to concerns over due process in high-profile treason proceedings and may weigh on perceptions of Uganda's justice system and political operating environment.
