Lira Airport Project Faces Land Title Dispute

By Jean-Marc Okito2 min read

Lira, August 25, 2026 - A proposed international airport in Lira has run into a land title dispute between the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority and local residents, highlighting acquisition risks around Uganda's regional aviation expansion plans.

Residents said some land purchases later turned out to fall within the planned airport boundaries, creating competing claims over plots earmarked for the project. The dispute comes as Uganda promotes new airport infrastructure beyond Entebbe to support trade, tourism and regional connectivity.

The controversy also reflects wider challenges identified around regional airfields and the financing, technical capacity and land management needed to deliver large aviation projects.

For investors and contractors, the Lira case signals the importance of land due diligence, compensation clarity and regulatory coordination before capital-intensive infrastructure works proceed.
