Law Society Warns Abductions And Electoral Abuses Are Eroding Rule Of Law

Kampala, August 14, 2026 - The Uganda Law Society has warned that electoral injustices, enforced disappearances and abductions are weakening the rule of law, adding to concerns about civil liberties ahead of political contests.

The warning follows a six-month assessment that documented cases in which citizens were allegedly abducted or disappeared. The findings raise questions about accountability, detention practices and the ability of affected individuals to access courts and legal representation.

The intervention is significant because it comes from the legal profession at a time when the credibility of state institutions is under scrutiny. Allegations of enforced disappearance and politically linked rights violations carry implications for electoral legitimacy, judicial confidence and Uganda's broader governance environment.
