Kikwit Military Court Opens Trial of Armed Gang Leader on Terrorism Charges

Kikwit, April 8, 2026 - A military court in Kikwit has opened proceedings against an alleged armed gang leader and several of his accomplices, who are facing charges including terrorism and armed robbery.

The trial began on Tuesday, April 7, before the Kikwit garrison military court in an exceptional sitting held in a newly inaugurated courtroom.

At the center of the case is Aaron Kikalula Kanda, also known as “Nija,” who prosecutors describe as the leader of a criminal group operating in the Kazamba commune. He is accused of orchestrating violent attacks against civilians during two incidents reported on March 1 and March 30.

According to the prosecution, the group carried out daytime raids that resulted in looting and left several residents injured. The defendants are being prosecuted on multiple counts, including armed robbery and acts classified as terrorism under military law.

During the opening session, the court formally identified the accused and outlined the procedural schedule. A mobile court hearing is also planned in Kazamba, near the affected area, to allow closer examination of evidence and witness testimonies.

Several victims, including elderly residents affected by the attacks, attended the hearing and indicated their willingness to testify during the proceedings.

Authorities say the case reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability and respond to armed violence affecting civilian populations in the region.
