By Amina Kabasele3 min readFrançais

April 17-18, 2026 - Reports from the Kidal region in northern Mali indicate that drone strikes carried out by Malian forces and allied foreign personnel struck areas including Talabit and Ibdakan, resulting in civilian casualties. According to field accounts, the strikes hit a nomadic encampment, killing two teenage civilians and injuring several other people. A civilian vehicle was also destroyed during the incident. Additional reports indicated that animals, including donkeys sheltering under trees, were also struck in separate strikes. The Malian Armed Forces, for their part, stated that the operations targeted three armed vehicles allegedly belonging to fighters, which they claimed were concealed under vegetation near the area where the animals were located. No independent verification of the competing accounts has been made available, and details regarding the exact circumstances of the strikes remain disputed. The incident comes amid ongoing military operations in northern Mali, where aerial surveillance and targeted strikes have intensified in recent weeks, often accompanied by contrasting narratives from military and local sources regarding targets and outcomes.
