Kazakhstan begins laboratory testing of Rwanda’s rare earth mineral samples

Astana, April 3, 2026 - Kazakhstan has begun laboratory testing of rare earth mineral samples from Rwanda as part of a planned cooperation in the mining sector between the two countries.

The announcement was made by Kazakhstan’s Deputy Minister of Industry and Construction, Iran Sharkhan, during the Geoscience & Exploration Central Asia 2026 forum.

He said the Tau-Ken Samruk Institute is currently analyzing Rwandan mineral samples to assess their composition and potential for commercial extraction, as well as to determine feasibility for future joint mining projects.

Officials indicated that the process includes geological assessment, laboratory verification, and review of legal frameworks required for bilateral cooperation.

The initiative follows a 2025 agreement between Rwanda and Kazakhstan to strengthen cooperation in mining, alongside broader partnerships in diplomacy, technology, agriculture, education, and finance.

Rwanda’s mineral sector, particularly in the Southern Province, includes areas such as Nyamagabe, Nyaruguru, Karongi, and Nyamasheke, which are known for various mineral deposits.

Further details are expected once laboratory results are finalized and joint feasibility studies are completed.
