Karongi: Four Arrested Over Killing of Man Accused of Witchcraft

Kigali, December 14, 2025 - The Rwanda National Police (RNP), working in close collaboration with local authorities and residents, have arrested four suspects in connection with the killing of Ndiramiye Vianney, 55, who was accused by villagers of practicing witchcraft.

The attack occurred in Karambo Village, Gisovu Cell, Twumba Sector, where the suspects-part of a group of six-allegedly stormed the victim’s home armed with traditional weapons.

According to authorities, the incident followed the death of Mushimiye Ndimubanzi at Mugonero Hospital, who reportedly left a note claiming he had been poisoned by Ndiramiye.

Police say Ndiramiye was bathing when he noticed the assailants approaching. He ran inside his house and locked himself in, but the attackers forced the doors open, assaulted him, and inflicted serious injuries on both his wife and daughter. Some of the suspects reportedly guarded the entrance to prevent rescue attempts.

Alerted residents contacted the police, and the injured were rushed to hospital. However, Ndiramiye, who sustained a fatal head injury after being struck with an axe, succumbed to his wounds.

The Executive Secretary of Twumba Sector, Uwimana Phanuel, told IGIHE that the suspects initially fled the scene, but joint efforts by residents and security agencies led to the arrest of four individuals, while two remain at large.

“Four suspects have been arrested and are being held at the Twumba Criminal Investigation Department Station. Two others are still being sought,” Uwimana said.

He strongly condemned the killing, describing it as an inhumane act, and urged residents to refrain from mob justice.

Uwimana emphasized that Rwanda has legal institutions capable of scientifically investigating poisoning claims, calling on citizens to report suspicions to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) rather than resorting to violence.

“There are institutions in Rwanda with the capacity to test and confirm poisoning. Justice must be sought through the law, not through violence,” he said.
