Kagame Says He Stopped Personal Football Funding Over Discipline Concerns

By Amina Kabasele3 min read

Kigali, August 24, 2026 - President Paul Kagame said he stopped investing his own money in football because of what he described as hatred, witchcraft and indiscipline in the sport, while pledging continued support if governance improves.

Speaking to journalists, Kagame said he had previously used personal funds and even borrowed when public budgets were insufficient, but lost confidence after repeated infighting among teams and players.

The comments follow recent national football successes, including Rayon Sports winning the CECAFA Kagame Cup, but highlight leadership frustration with sports administration.
