Kagame Holds Talks with Togolese Leader Faure Gnassingbé in Kigali
Kigali, May 13, 2026 - Rwandan President Paul Kagame on Wednesday received Togolese leader Faure Gnassingbé during a one-day working visit to Rwanda focused on bilateral cooperation and regional peace efforts.
President Gnassingbé arrived in Kigali earlier in the day and was welcomed at the airport by Rwanda’s Minister of Defence Juvenal Marizamunda.
According to Rwanda’s presidency, discussions between the two leaders centered on strengthening the growing relationship between Rwanda and Togo, as well as ongoing diplomatic initiatives aimed at promoting peace and stability in the Great Lakes region.
President Gnassingbé has been serving as the African Union mediator in the tensions between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo since April 2025, when he replaced Angolan President João Lourenço in the role.
His previous visit to Kigali in January 2026 involved consultations with President Kagame and African Union experts on the security situation in eastern DRC.
Those talks focused on diplomatic efforts to address the conflict in eastern Congo and on strengthening regional and continental cooperation mechanisms intended to support peace, security and stability across the Great Lakes region.
