Justice Ministry Installs Acting URSB Registrar Amid Financial Crimes Probe

By Jean-Marc Okito2 min read

Kampala, August 20, 2026 - Uganda appointed Mustapher Ntale as acting Registrar General of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau after senior officials were interdicted during a probe into alleged financial crimes, placing a key business registry institution under heightened scrutiny.

Justice Minister Norbert Mao made the appointment after complaints by a senior official triggered action against top URSB officials. The interdictions are intended to protect the integrity of the investigation and prevent possible interference.

The concerns include alleged wrongdoing at the bureau and a separate case in which the Microfinance Support Centre found that Kurbstone Investments, a company involved in arbitration with it, had wound up almost a year earlier.

The URSB is central to company registration, insolvency processes and commercial records. The probe could strengthen institutional accountability if handled transparently, but prolonged uncertainty may affect confidence among businesses relying on timely registry services.
