Judicial System Faces Backlog Amid Security Challenges

Niamey, November 27, 2025 - Despite ongoing judicial reforms, the judicial system continues to face significant challenges in processing terrorism- and organized crime-related cases. Reliable sources indicate that approximately 347 terrorism-related cases remain pending before specialized courts, with the High Court of Niamey accounting for nearly 42% of the backlog.

The delays are attributed to logistical constraints, security concerns for judicial personnel, and the complexity of gathering admissible evidence in conflict-affected regions. Analysts warn that this backlog could undermine the government’s security gains by delaying the prosecution of apprehended suspects, highlighting the need for accelerated judicial capacity building and operational support.
