IGAD and South Sudan Reaffirm Commitment to Peace and Regional Cooperation

JUBA, July 5, 2026 - The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the Government of South Sudan have renewed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in support of peace, stability, and sustainable development as the country continues its political transition. The commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting in Juba between IGAD Special Envoy to South Sudan, Ambassador Moussa Djama Ali, and South Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, James Pitia Morgan. The discussions focused on ongoing initiatives, recent commitments, and efforts aimed at consolidating peace and strengthening state institutions in South Sudan. Minister James Pitia Morgan praised IGAD’s continued contribution to South Sudan’s development and peacebuilding efforts, highlighting the regional organization’s role in mediation, political dialogue, and support for peace processes since the country gained independence in 2011. For its part, IGAD reiterated its determination to continue working closely with the South Sudanese government and other stakeholders to advance common objectives related to peace, security, governance, and development. The organization emphasized the importance of maintaining support for South Sudan’s transition process and preserving the progress achieved toward long-term stability in Africa’s youngest nation. During the meeting, Minister Morgan also expressed support for Ambassador Moussa Djama Ali’s efforts and diplomatic engagement as he prepares to continue his mission from Addis Ababa, marking a new phase in his contribution to regional peace and cooperation. The meeting highlighted IGAD’s continued role as a key partner in accompanying South Sudan through its political, economic, and security challenges while supporting efforts to build lasting peace and stronger institutions.
