Hybrid Maize Seed Boosts Yields For Rwandan Growers
Musanze, August 25, 2026 - A certified hybrid maize variety is drawing attention in northern Rwanda after farmers reported sharply higher yields, underscoring the commercial potential of improved seeds and agricultural inputs.
Mugabushaka Jean Pierre, a maize farmer in Cyuve Sector of Musanze District, said the H628 variety supplied by Kenya Seeds Company Rwanda Ltd has lifted his output from less than two tons per hectare with traditional seed to about eight to 10 tons per hectare.
He said he has grown the variety for five years and used the proceeds to expand into agricultural input sales, growing an initial investment of Rwf10 million to Rwf18 million and acquiring additional land.
Rwanda's quality control, competition and consumer protection authority said H628 was found compliant with national requirements and added to the list of varieties approved for cultivation, highlighting the regulatory role behind seed commercialization in the country.
