Hamdok Urges Unified Civilian Front To End Sudan War
Addis Ababa, August 23, 2026 - Former Sudanese prime minister Abdalla Hamdok said Sudan's civil war has no military solution and called for civilian unity and sustained regional diplomacy to stop the conflict.
Hamdok, who heads the Somoud coalition and the Declaration of Principles group, spoke after two days of consultations in Addis Ababa among political parties, civil society organizations, and youth and women's networks. The meetings were aimed at building a unified anti-war civilian front.
Participants outlined a peace vision built around three integrated and simultaneous tracks, including a humanitarian pathway to protect civilians, open aid routes, and support the unconditional return of displaced people.
The groups also rejected military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan's dialogue initiative, saying it was shaped unilaterally by one side, controlled in timing and venue by a warring party, and conducted under that side's security apparatus. They argued that such a process would legitimize the war rather than end it.
The consultations matter for Sudan's political outlook because a more cohesive civilian bloc could influence future mediation efforts, transition planning, and international engagement if the battlefield stalemate persists.
