Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Komsilga Sewage Sludge Treatment Plant
Ouagadougou, November 28, 2025 - On the occasion of World Toilet Day, the Minister of Public Service, Labor and Social Protection, Mathias Traoré, representing Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, officially launched the construction of the future Komsilga sewage sludge treatment plant in the village of Kalzi.
The Minister of the Environment, Water and Sanitation
Representatives of ONEA (National Water and Sanitation Office)
In his address, delivered on behalf of the Prime Minister, Mr. Traoré emphasized that this project addresses an urgent need: strengthening sludge treatment capacity from septic tanks, as the Kossodo and Zagtouli plants are now insufficient to meet the growing demand.
For the Prime Minister, this new infrastructure embodies:
The commitment to ensuring universal access to safe sanitation by 2030
Contribution to a circular economy through the valorization of sludge as organic fertilizer
Mr. Traoré also stressed the shared responsibility of citizens and sanitation companies, urging households to:
Recognize that investing in latrines is investing in health and dignity
He further demanded impeccable professionalism from the companies tasked with operating the plant, noting that no shortcomings would be tolerated given the substantial financial investment by the state.
The Komsilga plant, scheduled to begin operations on September 30, 2026, was financed with 4.5 billion yuan.
