Government Faces Constraints in Responding to Socio-Economic Challenges

By Jean-Marc Okito2 min readFrançais

Niger’s administration is struggling to address mounting socio-economic pressures, limited by structural and fiscal constraints.

Reforms to petroleum subsidies have increased household financial burdens while offering limited budgetary flexibility, particularly as uranium revenues decline. Meanwhile, the national social safety net program reaches only 12% of the country’s extremely poor households, leaving vast segments of the population vulnerable.

The lack of institutionalized tripartite social dialogue since the recent political transition has further hampered structured engagement between the government, employers, and workers, complicating efforts to manage labor relations effectively.
