Government and Business Leaders Unite to Remove Investment Barriers
KAMPALA, July 11, 2026 - Uganda is strengthening cooperation between government and the private sector to address investment challenges, fight counterfeit goods and improve the business environment as the country pursues its ambition of expanding the economy to US$500 billion by 2040. Manufacturers have called for urgent measures to address the growing challenge of counterfeit and substandard products, as well as delays in product certification that continue to affect legitimate businesses. The concerns emerged during a high-level engagement between the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives and business leaders, where participants discussed barriers affecting industrial growth and competitiveness. Manufacturers warned that fake products entering the market create unfair competition, reduce consumer confidence and increase pressure on companies investing in quality production. The private sector also raised concerns over delays in certification processes, saying slow approvals make it difficult for businesses to compete effectively in domestic and regional markets. Government officials reaffirmed their commitment to improving Uganda’s competitiveness by supporting manufacturers, strengthening micro, small and medium enterprises, reducing trade barriers within the East African Community and improving efficiency at border points. The government said ongoing investments in infrastructure, including roads, electricity, water systems and security, are aimed at creating a stronger foundation for industrial expansion. Officials also called for the creation of a centralised digital database of industries operating in Uganda, arguing that reliable data is essential for effective economic planning and policymaking. The meeting concluded with a commitment to deepen cooperation between government and industry players, remove investment bottlenecks and create a more supportive environment for manufacturing, trade and long-term economic growth.
