Genocide Convict Wenceslas Twagirayezu Held In Denmark After Rwanda Trial
Kigali, August 26, 2026 - Rwandan national Wenceslas Twagirayezu, convicted in Rwanda of crimes linked to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi and sentenced to 20 years in prison, is being held in Denmark.
Twagirayezu was transferred from Denmark to Rwanda in 2018 to stand trial after seeking refuge in Denmark following the genocide. He was tried by the Special Chamber for International and Transnational Crimes in Nyanza.
A former primary school teacher in the former Gisenyi Prefecture, he was accused of participating in crimes at sites including the former Mudende University and Busasamana Catholic Church. He denied the charges.
He was previously detained at Mageragere prison and later held at Nyanza prison, also known as Mpanga. The case remains significant for Rwanda's long-running genocide accountability process and its judicial cooperation with European states.
