Fuel Shortages Trigger Widespread Electricity Blackouts in Mali

Bamako, October 3, 2025 - The ongoing fuel crisis in Mali is severely disrupting electricity supply, with more than 80% of the country’s energy generated from thermal sources. Mopti, the nation’s fifth-largest city, has been completely without electricity for the past ten days, causing hospitals and essential services to operate at a reduced capacity.

In the capital, Bamako, power availability has dropped to just six hours per day, affecting public and private sector operations. Prior to the fuel blockade imposed by terrorist groups, cities already faced energy challenges, but electricity supply was significantly higher - Bamako previously had 19 hours of daily power.

Experts warn that unless a resolution is reached with the armed groups, Mali could face a nationwide standstill within two weeks, risking public unrest and increased terrorist proximity to urban centers.
