Fuel Shortages Cause Widespread Disruption Across Mali
BAMAKO, Mali - Mali is grappling with a severe fuel crisis, as long queues form daily at gas stations, with motorists often waiting three to four hours for a few liters of gasoline. Since October 7, only about 10% of gas stations have been operational, with regions like Mopti, Koutiala, and Ségou experiencing outages for over ten days.
The shortages are attributed to a blockade imposed by terrorists, forcing fuel convoys to travel under army escort.
On October 8, 300 tanker trucks arrived in Bamako under military protection, temporarily easing supply for the capital. However, by October 11, refueling challenges resurfaced, and many regions remain without access to fuel.
The crisis has caused urban transport costs to surge, with taxi and motorcycle fares doubling, and bicycles becoming the primary mode of transportation in some areas. In response, the Customs Directorate General has announced 24-hour operations at the petroleum products office to facilitate timely declaration processing and support importers.
