Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop Sparks Outrage Over Remarks on Mali’s First President

Bamako -, October 15, 2025 - Mali’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdoulaye Diop, has found himself at the center of a political storm after making controversial remarks about the country’s founding president, Modibo Keïta, during a panel discussion at the Lomé Forum in Togo on October 12.

Speaking on the theme “Africa Facing Complex Security Challenges,” Diop reflected on Africa’s early post-independence leaders, saying:

“When we look at our former President Modibo Keita, when he came to power at independence, he was barely 33 years old... He was a schoolteacher, he was not prepared to lead a country.”

The comments quickly sparked outrage in Mali, where Modibo Keïta remains a revered symbol of independence and national pride. Civil society organizations, historians, and social media users accused the minister of disrespecting the country’s founding father, calling on him to issue a public apology.

Faced with mounting criticism, Diop issued a statement on October 14, seeking to clarify his remarks.

“I would like to reiterate my deep respect for President Modibo Keïta, an iconic figure of our independence and a model of integrity, patriotic commitment, and foresight,” he said. “My intention was in no way to diminish his legacy, but to magnify the model of success that he represents in discussions on the contemporary challenges of African leadership.”

Despite the apology, the incident has reignited debate about the tone and responsibility of Mali’s political leaders when addressing the country’s historical figures, with many urging greater sensitivity toward national heroes who shaped Mali’s post-independence identity.
