Fire Kills Four in Central Darfur Displacement Camp
Golo, April 27, 2026 - At least four people, including children, were killed and 12 others injured on Monday after a large fire swept through a displacement camp in Sudan’s Central Darfur region.
Local authorities in areas controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Abdul Wahid al-Nur, confirmed the casualties, saying the blaze destroyed significant portions of the camp in Golo.
According to officials, the fire completely razed three blocks within the camp and partially damaged several nearby shelters, leaving many families without housing.
Authorities issued an urgent appeal to humanitarian organizations to provide emergency medical assistance and supplies for those injured in the incident.
The fire is the latest in a series of similar incidents affecting displacement camps across Darfur in recent months. Aid workers say such fires spread rapidly due to extreme heat, overcrowded conditions, and the widespread use of flammable materials in makeshift shelters.
The incident adds to the worsening humanitarian situation in the region, where large numbers of displaced people continue to live in precarious conditions with limited access to basic services and protection.
