Fire in Darfur Displacement Camp Kills Five, Leaves Over 1,400 Homeless

Zalingi, April 15, 2026 - At least five people, including two children, were killed after a fire swept through a displacement camp in Central Darfur, highlighting worsening humanitarian conditions for civilians uprooted by ongoing conflict. The blaze broke out on Wednesday in a temporary settlement in Rokoro, located in the North Jebel Marra area. The camp shelters thousands of people displaced by fighting in North Darfur, particularly from the city of El Fasher. Local sources reported that the fire spread rapidly through the overcrowded camp, fueled by shelters constructed from highly flammable materials. Dozens of makeshift homes were destroyed, leaving more than 1,400 people without shelter. The incident is the latest in a series of fires affecting displacement camps across the Darfur region, where living conditions remain precarious.
