FARDC Airstrikes Target AFC/M23 Positions in North and South Kivu
Kinshasa, December 12, 2025 - NORTH KIVU - As fighting persists in South Kivu, the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) have intensified operations in North Kivu, carrying out airstrikes on AFC/M23 positions in Masisi Territory, according to local sources.
On December 7, 2025, FARDC drones reportedly struck positions on Kahongole Hill and near the Masisi territorial administration, after reconnaissance flights over the area. Similar strikes were earlier reported in Nyabiondo, a strategic locality near Walikale, captured by AFC/M23 in March 2025.
Additional bombardments targeted Bukombo, between Masisi and Nyabiondo. Meanwhile, FARDC and allied forces have continued shelling Kamanyola and Kaziba in South Kivu since December 2, causing civilian casualties, displacement, and damage to property.
AFC/M23 retains control of the targeted areas and says it is maintaining security for civilians. The Congolese military operations are reportedly supported by Burundian forces, whose involvement has expanded despite ongoing losses.
The escalation comes as AFC/M23 continues rapid territorial advances, including the recent capture of Uvira, a key government stronghold held by FARDC for nearly ten months after its withdrawal from Bukavu.
