Family of Former President Edgar Lungu Denies Poisoning Claims

Lusaka, February 18, 2026 - Lawyers representing the family of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu have dismissed claims that his death was the result of poisoning.

Edgar Lungu passed away in South Africa in June 2025, but his body has yet to be buried. South African authorities have stated that his remains are still needed for an autopsy.

According to legal representatives, including Neo Mashele, the allegations of poisoning are unfounded. Lungu’s family is reportedly cooperating with security agencies to investigate the circumstances of his death.

His body remains in a South African morgue while legal disputes continue over the location of his burial. The African Union described the situation as “a serious matter that cannot be discussed publicly.”

Lungu’s family has expressed a desire for him to be buried in South Africa, in part to ensure that President Hakainde Hichilema would not miss the funeral.

This ongoing situation continues to attract attention in Zambia and across the region, as legal and diplomatic considerations surrounding the former president’s burial remain unresolved.
